Power in a Box: Innovative Technology May Make it Easier to Get That Hybrid

The most popular selling brand of hybrid electric vehicle saw a drop in sales last May. But it wasn’t due to lack of demand. The manufacturer simply didn’t have any more cars to sell.

For automakers accustomed to a one-hundred-day supply of any given vehicle, this is a problem – particularly when sales of other products are falling. One manufacturer endured a thirteen percent decrease in truck sales from February to May, and another is actually closing four truck plants while adding shifts to others that make smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

It’s no wonder hybrids are such an appealing alternative to so many these days. In ten years, the price of crude oil has risen as high as ninety dollars per barrel. HEVs, in the meantime, can get fifty, sometimes even sixty miles to the gallon in the city where gas mileage is usually the worst – a huge advantage.

Part of the shortage problem is a lack of batteries. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) require batteries to operate, but availability of certain cells, particularly lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is low. The Li-ion is a more efficient battery with a higher power density than its nickel metal hydride (NiMH) counterpart and is therefore being integrated into newer HEV models. But with a lack of supply comes a shortage of cars. The public is clamoring for vehicles promising to ease their gas burden, but there have been supply and demand challenges. Many automakers are concerned about the capability of hybrid components suppliers to keep up. One manufacturer has faced delays in the launch of its new hybrid Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), due to a labor dispute at one of its key Li-ion battery suppliers. Another manufacturer launching a new hybrid sedan in spring 2009 has already indicated concerns about how quickly suppliers can provide parts.

Integrate Your Case Management Software With Your Work Provider

Many Conveyancing and Personal Injury solicitors use work providers. DPS OneOffice for Personal Injury and Conveyancing can integrate with many of the major work providers on the market.

When a work providers sends a case to your firm, DPS OneOffice automatically creates a file in your system and informs the key person that this file has been incepted. The system automatically files progress reports with your work provider and recognises incoming and outgoing emails that are related to that case, filing them against the file in DPS with no user intervention.

One such work provider DPS can integrate with is Albany Assistance, who specialise in the provision of outsourced services to the insurance industry including claims management services and personal injury management.

Albany Assistance are a major work provider for Tayntons Solicitors LLP, a client of DPS Software. Tayntons use DPS Personal Injury to automatically create files, track cases and send out initial letters relevant to cases that have been provided by Albany Assistance.

DPS are also compatible with movewithus, a major property services provider. Heenans Solicitors required a system which was able to integrate with movewithus, their principal property service provider. When movewithus submit a case to Heenans, DPS automatically creates and updates a file as the case progresses.

Brendan Heenan, Business Manager at Heenans Solicitors commented: “The DPS MWU Agent has substantially reduced data inputting, thereby getting the instruction off to a flying start. This alone has enabled us to significantly increase the volume of instructions handled and decrease administration.”

GPS Charts Course For Success

GPS systems have become increasingly popular, portable and affordable. Sales for this small navigation system are off the charts, and they are the hottest ticket at every electronics store and big box retailer around.

So what is GPS exactly, how does it work, and why is it so popular? What other uses are there for technology? For the answers to this and more, keep reading.

What is GPS?

GPS is an abbreviation for Global Positioning System. This technology was developed by the US Department of Defense, and employs a network of 24 strategically placed satellites around the globe. It was originally intended for military use only, but the government made it available for anyone to use in the 1980s. That coupled with latest advances in portable technology has made GPS the new hot item. It is extremely popular with those who drive for a living, such as couriers.

How Does it Work?

A GPS receiver uses signals transmitted by these GPS satellites to triangulate exact locations. The 24 satellites circle the planet twice a day and transmit signals to the earth, which are what the receivers use. The receivers basically use the difference between the time a signal was transmitted and received to calculate how far away the satellite is.

In order to track movement as well as calculate an object’s latitude and longitude, a GPS receiver has to get signals from at least three satellites. If you add one more satellite to the mix, you can track altitude as well. One the receiver has the location, other variables can be accounted for such as speed, distance to destination, and more.
